Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds - Bad Mind Radio OR What's In A Name?

Episode Summary

Have you ever thought: What's in your name?

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

It ain’t easy coming up the ranks with a last name like mine. Over my lifetime I’ve heard Wyzga mis-pronounced every which way as folks have tried to give credit to each and every letter, or marveled that it’s a name of consonants with a single vowel, or even asked if it was a name at all and not something else.

Wyzga is as traditional a Polish name as our food: pierogi, kielbasa, bigos, golabki, and kluskis. I was raised on bread and sausage, cucumbers and sauerkraut, butter and sour cream.

As the story goes, Wyzga means little piece of wood, bigger than a splinter but smaller than a matchstick. And because it ends in the letter ‘a’ it’s descended from royalty unlike those peasant folk whose names end in ‘ski’ or ‘sky’

But I have another use for my name. On those days when Bad Mind Radio is playing in my head I can think of it as broadcasting from Station W*Y*Z*G*A playing 24/7 over the airwaves of Whidbey Island, Washington.  And then dial it down.
