Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Choose One Thing. Calm the Chaos. Focus.

Episode Summary

The way out of a situation can often be a matter of choosing one thing and going with that, and then doing it again.

Episode Notes

Hello to you in Hanoi and Da Nang, Vietnam!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Once, when I was feeling pretty hopeless, couldn’t see a way out or what to do my neighbor Fred offered me a lesson. It’s an illustration of a man dressed in a business suit carrying a briefcase and trapped in a blizzard of papers.

You’re here, he said, pointing to the man. Now, choose one paper. It doesn’t matter which you choose; just choose. What matters is that you begin. The act of choosing will calm the chaos you feel and show you options.

Then what, I asked. Then focus on that one thing. Take care of that one thing. Feel the shift in the situation. You’ve gotten something done. Now, do it again. And then do it again. In time everything will be alright. And, you know what? Fred was right!
