Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Compete, Cooperate, Collaborate, Surrender.

Episode Summary

At home, at work, on the playing field we move between competition, cooperation, collaboration, and surrender; it's helpful to know where we are and what we're doing there.

Episode Notes

Hello to you in Riverside, California!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

At home, at work, on the field competition is useful, as are cooperation and collaboration.

Competition is the process of trying to win by acting against another say, in sports.

Cooperation is working with others *and* achieving one’s own goals as part of a common goal. For example, active listening, showing respect by taking turns, or realizing that you may need to hand over a lead position in a project because someone else can fill the role more effectively.

Collaboration is coordinated activity where the participants work toward solving a shared problem or goal.  Brainstorming is a classic example of collaboration.

Surrender is willful acceptance of one’s limitations, and can be a healing practice of trust in self and others.

Question: When and how are you competing, cooperating, collaborating and, surrendering?
