60 Seconds: Fahrenheit 451 And The Book You Save.

Episode Summary

What book would you memorize to save it?

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Long before written communication there was the oral tradition whereby a community’s culture, history and traditions were passed down by word-of-mouth and thus preserved.

Ray Bradbury’s classic novel Fahrenheit 451 - that being the temperature at which paper burns - certainly has a theme of book burning; but the deeper meaning is a warning coming to us from 1953 when Bradbury’s book was published. 70 years ago Bradbury was aware of the monopolizing effect of social media to transform future generations into a society with no genuine connections, no distinctive thoughts, and excessive reliance on technology.

Over the decades Bradbury’s work has been praised for its defense of literature as necessary both to the humanity of individuals and to civilization. In the novel book-loving residents of a dystopia save literature by each memorizing a book.

Question: Which book would you save by memorizing it?
