Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: “Finger on Map” Method to Navigate Your Business.

Episode Summary

With your finger on the map of where you want to go, you gain perspective before you decide if an idea is feasible, viable, valuable.

Episode Notes

Hello to you in Merrylands, Sydney, Australia!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

When I first learned to fly a small aircraft (Cessna 152) I was aware I needed some help navigating the map when I was 10,000 feet in the air. My instructor had me use the FOM Method - finger on map. At all times I was to have my finger on the map so I knew where I was and where I was going. Did it mean I turned the map around, even upside down as I flew? Yes.

What a great strategy! It’s no different from piloting a boat, walking trail in the woods, or seeing your business through to the next phase or step or generation. You have to know where you are and where you want to go. How else can you navigate unless you have your finger on the map?

It’s all about perspective! You are here at X and you want to get there at Y. Plot it out and see what it will take to know if your idea is feasible, viable, valuable. Before you decide, put your finger on the map and explore the way to go.
