Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds - Finger On Map To Navigate Your Business

Episode Summary

You need to have your finger on the map to navigate from here to there, even in business.

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

When I first learned to fly a Cessna 152 I was very aware of something I couldn’t do so well: read a map to navigate. My instructor had me use the FOM method - finger on map. At all times I was to have my finger - usually my thumb - on the map so I knew where I was and where I was going. Did it mean I turned the map around as I flew? Yes.

It’s no different if you’re piloting a boat, walking trail in the woods, or seeing your business through to the next phase or step or generation. You have to know where you are and where you want to go. How else can you navigate unless you have your finger on the map?

You are here at X and you want to go there at Y. Plot it out and see what it will take to get from here to there. Put your finger on the map and go.
