Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and Youthful Indiscretions

Episode Summary

We each have youthful indiscretions, some never saw the light of day and others became part of the family lore. What are your stories?

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with several questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."

Mom died in 1999. Several years before she and dad took an Amtrak trip around the country to visit their children. Last on the itinerary was Paul, the youngest. The one mom wanted to keep in her pocket forever, the one who - because he was the last child - could do no wrong.

Arriving at the apt mom was surprised to meet Paul’s roommate, Debbie.  No one had mentioned a roommate; but Paul insisted that’s what she was.

You know mothers: watch and wait. And mom watched and waited.

The last night of their visit Debbie served dessert using a hand-carved wooden pie server.

Several days after mom and dad left Debbie asked Paul if he’d seen the pie server. Could mom have misplaced it doing dishes?

I’ll text her.

Mom,  I’m not saying that you did misplace the pie server and I’m not saying that you didn’t but since you were here it’s gone missing.

Time passed and mom’s reply:

Paul, I’m not saying that you do sleep with Debbie and I’m not saying that you don’t but if Debbie was sleeping in her own bed she’d have found the pie server by now.

Here’s your prompt: Which of your youthful indiscretions did your family learn about, how did they shape you, and what are the stories that are being told?

Share your story with someone or something: your journal, your animal companion, the trees in the woods. All that matters is you discover some happiness and wisdom reflecting on those long ago youthful  indiscretions.
