Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: Be Willing to Jump!

Episode Summary

Remember when you were willing to jump? Write that story!

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."

I’ve known my friend Gene since we served together at the US Naval Hospital on pediatric wards. We went our separate ways after being honorably discharged, and then because the world is small and the Internet is large Gene found me and we’ve become fast friends.

He reminded me the other day: "Before you can fly, you have to be willing to jump from a high place."

That reminded me of a much loved song: The Cape by Guy Clark.

And both reminded me of friendship, stories, taking a leap of faith, the passage of time, and the joy of it all.

Story Prompt: Take a listen to the song, remember when you were willing to jump from a high place and write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.

The Cape - by Guy Clark

Eight years old with flour sack cape

Tied all around his neck

He climbed up on the garage

He’s figurin' what the heck

He screwed his courage up so tight

The whole thing come unwound

He got a runnin' start and bless his heart

He headed for the ground

Chorus:

Well, he's one of those who knows that life

Is just a leap of faith

Spread your arms and hold your breath

And, always trust your cape

Now he’s all grown up with a flour sack cape

Tied all around his dreams

He's full of piss and vinegar

He's bustin' at the seams

So, he licked his finger and checked the wind

It's gonna be do or die

He wasn't scared of nothin', boys

He was pretty sure he could fly

Chorus

Now he’s old and grey with a flour sack cape

Tied all around his head

He's still jumpin' off the garage

And will be till he's dead

All these years the people said

He's actin' like a kid

He did not know he could not fly

So he did
