60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: Canned Fruit Cocktail and Life.

Episode Summary

Del Monte canned fruit cocktail salad was more than a childhood food; what about your memories?

Episode Notes

Hello to you listening in Van Wert, Ohio!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."

Del Monte® canned fruit cocktail salad was (and probably still is) a staple in many kitchen pantries. It was in our household and helped stretch the food budget for a family of 9. Maybe, like me, you remember eating the syrupy sweetness and hoping to get one half of the 2 or 3 cherries hidden among the other fruits.

When I think about it now I know how much care, frugality, decision-making went into feeding a family of 9 on what was probably a lower middle class income; and yet we never went hungry. There was always a meal, a pair of shoes, good education, values, a proper upbringing with manners and kindness and lots of sharing. The first time I had my own room was as a young US Navy nurse following college graduation.

Story Prompt: When you recall a childhood food what else do you remember? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.
