One of your storytelling powers is to bridge the distance from realism to “the incredible realities of Life.” [Ursula LeGuin] A place to begin is story setting.
Humans exist within settings. What it means to be a human takes place within settings. Setting can be home, fantasy, culture, family and more. You, storyteller, must understand first and foremost how setting will function in your story. The setting of your story details what binds it to time, place and character.
Story Prompt: To begin the search for the story setting, sit quietly and imagine what this place might smell like, sound like, feel like. Hold this place in all your senses. Bring it into your bones. When you can imagine yourself *there* your listeners will be compelled to join you in this place you’ve made real. Write that story!
Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story.
