Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: What Happens Next in That Dark Woods?

Episode Summary

5 basic elements of a story and what happens next?

Episode Notes

Hello to you listening in Fort Collins, Colorado!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."

At its most basic a story is made up of 5 elements: time, place, setting, character(s) and plot. The first 4 create the container to hold the plot - the "what happened." For example: Once upon a time, long ago and far away there was woodcutter and his wife living in a hut in a forest. Now you know where you are and who’s involved.

The plot is where all the ups and downs take place to reveal what happened to change their lives and how they responded. For example, if they found a baby wearing a crown lying under a tree, then what?  Your listeners expect you to pick them up, drop them down over and over again while you, always 1 step ahead, keep them asking, “What happens next?”

Story Prompt: Once upon a moonlit night I found myself in a dark wood, unfamiliar, far from home, the sound of cannon fire echoed in the distance. What happens next? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.

This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic.
