170 years ago in 1854 Jacob and Sarah Ebey were 61 and 58 years old respectively (more than twice the age of the average traveler) when they left Missouri and set out on the Oregon Trail. They would travel over 2,000 miles and across the Rocky Mountains. Where were they headed? Whidbey Island, Washington. Why leave home and all they knew for this arduous journey in their late years? Because their son Isaac said that the farmland was far better than any in the Midwest, and this windswept prairie on the new frontier would be home for the families.
