I was asked, What’s a story hook?
A hook grabs attention.
A fishing hook grabs the fish's mouth to catch and reel it in.
A music hook is often those few bars of a song we keep humming whether an opening (like Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water) or a chorus.
A story hook is a technique to grab the reader’s attention and create congruence with what follows.
A story hook could be the Big Idea of the narrative; a unique angle - Wicked the Musical did this: Ephelda was not always the Wicked Witch of the West. A story hook makes a promise about what will follow, arouses curiosity, or begs the question: What happens next?
For example:
Ask a question: What if there was a way to transform hazy ideas into change-making stories?
Write a relatable statement: Anybody with a microphone can post a podcast; but it's getting listeners. Maybe you can relate.
Make a promise: If you stick with me to the end you will get X. This will get you that.
