We've all experienced reluctance, hesitation or fear to get involved. But what happened when you pushed back against your fear? A story to prompt a story.
Hello to you listening in Castelo Branco, Portugal!
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.
Recently, my sister told me about the disgust she felt listening to others continue to spread the unsubstantiated lie that legal Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio were stealing and eating their neighbors’ pets. She said she had to speak out for those who had no voice.
Maybe it’s true and maybe it isn’t but once there was a teacher in a classroom of children who took a goldfish out of its bowl, set it on her desk, told the children that if they got out of their seat they would be punished, and left the room.
The children sat and watched as the fish flopped around gasping for air.
No one wanted to get in trouble. So there they sat.
Until one little girl jumped out of her seat, picked up the fish and put it back in the bowl where it began to swim.
The teacher who had been watching through the window in the door came back into the classroom. “Is there only one among you who has the courage to stand up to authority? This is the lesson you must learn: Never let the fear of getting in trouble stop you from doing what’s right.”
Story Prompt: When has fear of getting in trouble NOT stopped you from doing what’s right? Write that story!
