Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Being Shot With Two Arrows.

Episode Summary

We may not be able to avoid the first arrow of pain but we can control the second arrow of suffering.

Episode Notes

Hello to you in Munich, Germany!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Our lives contain pain and suffering. Pain is the physical sensation we feel. Suffering is the story we create around the pain. Yes, my ex-husband chose to have a year long affair and then leave. That was pain and bad enough! But the real trouble showed up in the suffering I created with a story about my so-called failures and inadequacies. All a story does is amplify the feeling of pain. This won’t do.

In time I learned that it was like being shot with two arrows: first, his infidelity and divorce and then second:  the story about my faults.  To reclaim my own way forward I had to learn to say: I’m in pain but I won’t suffer. Pain will return but if I leave the back door open it will have a way out. Try this and see if it helps you, too.

This is the place to thrive together.
