Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Trust

Episode Summary

What if the well-meaning friends who tell you to trust are right?

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Maybe this has happened to you: well-meaning friends and colleagues tell you: just trust. Well, what if your trust has been shaken? Trampled even?

There’s no help for it but to get back on the horse that threw you, grieve how you need to, and begin anew. I’m not fully into this practice myself; but I do know I’m headed in the right direction as the poet Thomas R. Smith writes in Trust:

Trust

"It's like so many other things in life

to which you must say no or yes.

So you take your car to the new mechanic.

Sometimes the best thing to do is trust.

The package left with the disreputable-looking

clerk, the check gulped by the night deposit,

the envelope passed by dozens of strangers—

all show up at their intended destinations.

The theft that could have happened doesn't.

Wind finally gets where it was going

through the snowy trees, and the river, even

when frozen, arrives at the right place.

And sometimes you sense how faithfully your life

is delivered, even though you can't read the address."
