Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Freedom Is Choosing to Establish.

Episode Summary

What a difference one word makes to our understanding. What's yours?

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

I was listening to a dharma talk given by my teacher Thich Nhat Hanh on one of his favorite subjects: the power of mindful breathing to bring us freedom by letting go of past regrets and future worries. Why? Nothing is more important than our peace, our joy. How does he become free? Thay says, “I establish myself in the present moment.”

I was struck by that word, establish, which means ‘to begin or bring about’. In other words, freedom arises from a  deliberate decision to choose to dwell in the present moment, to choose peace, to choose joy.

What a difference one word makes: establish.

Question: What is your word? What is the difference it makes to you?
