Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Letting Go Gave Me Freedom.

Episode Summary

What possessed them to let me go?

Episode Notes

Hello to you in Glasgow, Scotland!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

What possessed them to say “Yes”? In the several months between college graduation and reporting to Naval Officer Training School I planned to backpack across Europe; but my partner dropped out at the very last minute. And still my parents let me go, drove me to Kennedy International Airport, waved me down the jetway. No security in those days. No cell phones or WiFi either. All they would have is the occasional postcard making its slow way across the Atlantic Ocean.

My folks were not frivolous or careless. What was it that allowed me the freedom to go? I never asked them and now that they’re gone I have only a story of my own making.

Question: Whether you’re a parent or had a parent in one form or another, someone helped you to see a far horizon. How were you encouraged to be free?
