Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Look Down - The Sacred Is in the Ordinary.

Episode Summary

The great opportunity is not out there somewhere. The great opportunity is where you are.

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

While hiking the north Whidbey Island headlands on Thanksgiving Day I couldn’t help but recall what my friend Jey Jeyendran said to me: “There are no duplicates in nature.” Imagine that! If true for all these blades of grass then our own good selves, too?

Yes, said the Naturalist John Burroughs:

The lesson which life constantly repeats is to 'look under your feet.'

You are always nearer to the divine and the true sources of your power than you think.

The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive.

The great opportunity is where you are.

Do not despise your own place and hour.

Every place is under the stars.

Every place is the center of the world.”

[John Burroughs, Studies in Nature and Literature]
