Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Never underestimate the power of walking to reveal the world around you and within you. When the Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska delivered her lecture for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996 she said "whatever else we might think of this world—it is astonishing. ... nothing is usual or normal. Not a single stone and not a single cloud above it. Not a single day and not a single night after it. And above all, not a single existence, not anyone's existence in this world."

Where I walk the whole of Nature is revealed. We have brand new fawns and their protective mothers guiding them across a road, over a ditch, into the woods; birds of every size and shape and sound have returned to join those who wintered over; if you hear something like a car alarm chirping overhead that would be a bald-headed eagle; somewhere grass is being cut and carries with it the nostalgic fragrance of childhood summertime.  Walking is whole body exercise on steroids! When we walk the brain and mind are engaged so that walking actually shapes the imagination, calls up creativity, and unleashes all that wonderful clarity of thought.

What about you? What is the unusual, the magical, the wonderful that’s revealed when you walk?

This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic.
