Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Nothing to Hold on to! Now What?

Episode Summary

What if you can't tie a knot in the end of your rope and hold on?

Episode Notes

Hello to you in Lima, Peru!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Maybe like me you’ve asked someone for help and they said: “Tie a knot in the end of your rope and hold on to that.

It’s actually good advice. Think about it: with enough rope to tie a knot and enough strength to hold on you'll probably be okay. But what if there’s nothing to hold on to?

I remember an Outward Bound mountaineering trip high in the Canadian Rockies with 5 other women. In pairs we were climbing up and then rappelling down the sheer face of a vertical mountain cliff. The guides were far above us, out of sight, having anchored the ropes. With fear in her voice my climbing partner cried out: “I can't find anything to hold on to.” Time passed. And then a voice from far above us replied, “Grab it with both hands......” Believe it or not this worked!

Practical Tip: When you can’t find anything to hold on to, grab it with both hands.
