Episode Summary

You've hit a dead end. Now what? Where's the next move when there is no next move?

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

You’ve hit a dead end. Now what? Where’s the next move when there is no next move?

My nephews were born a year or so apart and grew up closer to each other than 2 halves of an Oreo cookie. By the time they were 3 and 4 they were learning how to play chess. Let’s call it “child chess” which captures the essence of chess but lets go of the more abstract adult moves.

First the basics: what each piece is, how it moves, some easy plays, then gradually building to sportsmanship and thoughtful calculation. They enjoyed the strategy, the 'what if?', the ‘what next?’ move. They learned that chess (like life) is a game where you can tell the future if you know how to spot the next move when there is no next move.

Question: You’ve hit a dead end. Now what? Step back. Look at the playing board of your life, your job, your project. Return to the basics. See the pieces. Recall the moves. Imagine the plays. Invite possibility. Ask, ‘what if?’

Practical Tip: There is always a next move if you take the time to thoughtfully calculate it.
