Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds - Reading Of A Rainy Tuesday Afternoon

Episode Summary

Rain beckons us away from the office, the computer screen and, like proper gentry we leisure.

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Our library has re-opened, sort of. A phone call tells the staff you are waiting outside in the designated area on the sidewalk. A staff member steps out and lays a brown paper sack like something from the liquor store or Chinese take-out on a folding table and steps back. That’s your signal to step forward and pick up the sack of books. Loan times are reduced; most likely for quarantine. But! We have books in hand.

Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday afternoon.  One more thing that is charming and beguiling about Whidbey Island: summer rain of a Tuesday afternoon. Rain pitter-patters you away from the computer screen, drums you out of your office space, drizzles out the many reasons why now is the best time to pull up a couch, toss the afghan over your feet and  read.

And, obedient as I am to the rain  “...I read with the leisurely disregard Jimmy Mac says is the hallmark of proper gentry.” [History of the Rain by Niall Williams
