Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Same Word, Different Meanings, What Gets Lost?

Episode Summary

The ways in which we define words carries over to stories, narratives and histories keeping some and deleting others.

Episode Notes

Hello to you in Milford Haven, Wales!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

All my life I’ve had a love affair - with words. The other  day I was in a conversation about words and their definition, in particular the rightness and wrongness of how a word is used.

When I say the word "runner” what comes to mind? You might think athlete! And you’re right! But what if you said runner bean (like a butter bean); the decorative runner on your kitchen table or hallway floor; what happens to pantyhose when snagged; a go-fer on say, a movie set; slang for someone who leaves you high and dry at the altar; or my favorite, Road Runner. Each is right in its own context.

But what if I said your definition is wrong? How might this delete your experience? What if this is the way we delete histories, cultural narratives, societal stories - by calling them wrong? What have we lost? And how do we get it back?
