Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds: Sea Lions and Apple Trees and Hope.

Episode Summary

These days all looks hopeful.

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Walking the bluffs 100 feet above Admiralty Inlet I caught sight of a large raft of California sea lions barking, flippers flying, rolling like thunder, roiling the water. I counted a dozen of them - probably a harem with a bull - and from the activity maybe another male was trying to muscle in. The males weigh about 1100 pounds so it was quite a show. So much so that the Port Townsend ferry slowed as it came nearer.

And then they were gone. Nothing but still water.

Martin Luther said, “Even if I was to learn that the world would go to pieces in the morning I would still plant the apple tree.”

To me, both are evidence of hope.

Bonus: While California sea lions most often haul out along our coast and farther north, 1 chose to perch - on the roof of a small car - all 600 pounds - in our local boatyard.

This is the place to thrive together.
