Her name was Charlie, 7 years old and on vacation with us on the North Carolina coast. Skipping up the sandy path leading to the rented beach house where I slumped on the porch with my then boyfriend, Charlie stopped dead in her tracks, put hands on hips, screwed up her face and said, “Hey! is *that* your *dad*?” As if she couldn’t believe her eyes!
Right then I knew this guy was too darn small for me - too old in spirit - too controlling. We were like chalk and cheese.
