Stories From Women Who Walk

60 Seconds The Power Behind Our Rituals

Episode Summary

As Dr.Laurie Santos of The Happiness Lab tells it, there's more to the made-up rituals in our lives than meets the eye.

Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

Thank you to Dr. Laurie Santos of The Happiness Lab for bringing to light the science behind rituals, how they knit together our lives, ease grief, bring joy, organize behaviors, provide a sense of control, and so much more. It got me reflecting.

The morning after the evening mom died I was washing a coffee cup at her kitchen sink and looked out the window to the flowering bush there. Mom was a master gardener and  this particular bush attracted pollinators. But I had never seen it covered with a kaleidoscope of butterflies as it was in that moment. Right then I knew mom was a butterfly. And now with every single one I see while walking I say, “Hey, mom! Thanks for stopping by.” And if there are two flutterbyes, I say, “Hey! Who’s your friend?”

What about you? What rituals have you created and how do you use them?
