It's Memorial Day in America when we stand, salute and mourn all those who have served in the US Armed Forces and their families. Do you remember your service song?
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.
My dad and his 5 brothers enlisted before and after Pearl Harbor. Some, like dad, were underage but when asked if they were over 18 they didn’t lie; a piece of paper with the number 18 written on it was in their shoe. Dad was a Navy radioman. Late in life he could still type out the Morse Code. Somehow my grandmother prayed them all home from their various overseas war theaters.
Maybe it was seeing the movie South Pacific with the actress Mitzi Gaynor one too many times or maybe it was the desire to follow in the footsteps of my dad and uncles. Graduating college I applied to and was accepted as a U.S. Navy officer in the Nurse Corps. I served three years working on surgical and then medical pediatric floors. Anchors Aweigh, our service song, still brings tears to my eyes.
Thank you and each of you for your service. I still give a ship. I bet you do, too. Sing out your service song to take part in our national Memorial Day.
