Episode Notes

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You’ll recognize yourself in these true-life stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference their journeys have made. I’m your host, Diane Wyzga.

Welcome back to Part 2 of the podcast interview with my guest, Sue Heatherington, Quiet Disruptor, author of the book Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting, and a catalyst for thinking pioneers, innovators and change-makers who joined us from her small valley in Swansea, Wales. We were talking about quiet disruptors when I asked Sue to assume you might have to work with or encounter someone who is not so agreeable to this notion of disrupting quietly; how would you suggest working with folks like that to get them to see the necessity of hopeful, quiet change? Let’s hear what she has to say about this and so much more on creating change without shouting.

Minutes 37:01

0:00 to 2:00      Intro

2:00 to 4:15       Experience Over Telling

Question: Let’s assume you might have to work with or encounter someone who is not so agreeable to this notion of disrupting quietly, how would you suggest working with folks like that to get them to see the necessity of hopeful, quiet change?

4:15 to 15:35       The Quiet Disruptors Blog

Question: One of the ways I’ve noticed you doing that (enabling to experience) is your blog. Would you tell us a little bit more about that.

Host: Harvesting comes to mind as Sue walks through the valley: ideas, thoughts, images. The other is the reveal. After 3 decades in storytelling the experience is that the best tellers use a reveal, the invitation to vulnerability, to humanness, the story burns your bones. The world is in need of those narratives of depth. There is more here than you get at first blush; and if you are willing to go with me we can discover that together.

15:35 to 21:05       Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting

The unexpected gifts born of all the many challenges, suffering, turmoil still balances on hope. Who could have imagined there was good and hope to be experienced? Jane Goodall’s newest book is hope. Suzanne Sinard’s work on integrated forests as hope. And now Sue with the quality of hope. Question: is this notion of hope what gave rise to your book Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting OR, in the process of writing did you access hope?

Host: “I just love that! It belongs on a billboard.”

21:05 to 31:05       The Process of Writing the Book

I understood you to say at some time - correct me if I got these words upside down and backwards, “The book is the road & the practice.” Is that correct? Lets do it this way: tell us something about the process of writing this book.

Question: How does a Quiet Disruptor go about inhabiting the role and do what they came to do without becoming invisible?

 Close

Question: As we begin to close, is there something that was left unsaid?
